So, you're interested in Floating - perhaps someone described an experience they had in an 'isolation pod'; maybe your physician or therapist recommended 'float therapy'; or maybe, even, you heard about 'sensory deprivation tanks' on a podcast or T.V. show.

What's the difference between these things? And WHY would someone get inside for an hour or more?

    Read on . . .

'Floating' in an 'Isolation Tank' refers to the practice of R.E.S.T. (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique), a medical technique using technologies developed in the 1950's as a way to study the effects of pausing the flow of information to the mind and body. Removing external light, sound, temperature fluctuation, and the pressure of gravity from the body, medical researchers quickly found that this technique was the most effective method of inducing the human relaxation response.

Over the ensuing decades, a large body of clinical research has been published, demonstrating through hundreds of scientific studies that this technique has valuable applications for many varied health conditions - from chronic pain, depression, insomnia, hypertension, and burnout . . . to fibromyalgia, arthritis, PTSD, sports injury, and the effects of chronic stress..

Originally very prohibitive and unavailable to the general public due to the great expense involved, the technology underlying Flotation R.E.S.T. has improved dramatically, and in doing so - has become much more accessible to the public.

70 years later, Flotation R.E.S.T. is employed by clinical practitioners, medical doctors, physical therapists, elite performance athletes, military veterans, creative artists, office workers, business leaders, construction crews, and .... just about any other type of person you know who eats food, breathes oxygen, and sleeps.

How do I float? What makes it work?

Simulating a zero-gravity environment eases tension & provides pain relief

Using a self-operated, egg-shaped or rectangular enclosure (similar in size to a large walk-in shower), a person lays horizontally on a body of water 12 inches deep, supersaturated with 1,000 lbs of medical grade magnesium sulfate salt, and kept at a comforting temperature of 95˚ F.

The water, now a silky, concentrated solution more buoyant than the Dead Sea, and 10x as salty as the ocean, causes the body to float effortlessly above the surface - repelling the participant from the bottom like a strong magnet.

This removes much of the effect and sensation of gravity that each of us experiences 24/7 in life, and encourages a deep release of muscular and spinal tension. Further, the air and water temperature, being kept close to that of the body, is perceived as neither hot nor cold, but just right - almost as though it is not there at all . . . creating the sensation of floating freely in space.

Turn down the noise, tune in to your self, float out into space . . .

The above conditions alone are sufficient to create a deeply relaxing environment that enables the body to rapidly eradicate inflammation and the negative hormonal effects of daily stress. However, many who utilize the technique go further, turning off all light and sound inside the tank - leaving only the sound of the body itself, and the inner visualizations of the conscious mind. Thus we have the full 'sensory deprivation' experience as often described in wide-eyed, hushed tones and sci-fi movies.

As the mind and body progressively become more relaxed throughout the session, thoughts are free to drift, taking the participant away from the busyness and noise of the everyday. Gone are phone notifications, traffic noises, and external demands.

The only requirement is to let go.

    Explore the private sea

The effect is unique to each individual, but many compare this progressive state of deep relaxation to lucid dreaming. Indeed, people often find themselves re-discovering vivid, long-forgotten memories or gaining fresh perspective on life situations during their float session.

Some simply drift off to sleep - which is completely safe, and also quite a lovely experience. Indeed, if you're running low on ZZZ's, the level of recuperative rest achieved during an hour of floating can absolutely help compensate and get you through.

Why do this? To remove inflammation. To get relief from pain. To process a difficult week. To dream. To reset your circadian rhythm, and sleep better. To get peace when you feel too much. To de-stress, and reset your mind. To strive toward a creative breakthrough in your work. To deepen your meditation practice. To recover from your workouts faster. To feel freaking phenomenal.

    - Some of the great stuff we get to hear post-float -

    "I feel . . . just so HAPPY!"

"I'm just so blissed out right now, I kind of don't know what to do with myself. Yes, please to the warm tea."

    "You guys are geniuses!"

"I went in feeling like roadkill - I came out feeling like a million bucks. Will definitely be doing this again."

    (IN 10 EASY STEPS)

A float session is meant to be relaxing - we've made it easy, by providing everything you might need.

    Check In

Check in at the front desk; one of our team members will answer any questions & show you to your private suite.

Disrobe & shower, using the provided soap & shampoo (save conditioner for after your float).

If you'd like, utilize the provided earplugs. If you have any small cuts or abrasions, apply a small amount of the provided petroleum jelly - this will prevent the salt from stinging.

    Dedicate your thoughts; Disconnect

    Turn off your phone.
Now, take a moment to remind yourself that you're here to relax, & thank yourself for making this decision.

    Enter the Tank

Carefully step into the tank, & sit down until you slide naturally into a horizontal position. Once comfortable, reach up & pull down the lid of the tank via the handle.

Take 10 slow breaths, counting 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 for each inhale, & each exhale. Focus on the air entering & leaving your body. If you feel fidgety, try to slowly pass your focus along your body from toes to the top of your head, taking stock of areas that may be tensed. Visualize their release, & imagine yourself letting go of absolutely all tension & muscle activation.

    Drift . . .

As you become relaxed in the solution, allow yourself to drift. Try letting your arms flow above your head, and allow your mind to wander. If you like, allow yourself to fall into a light, dreamy sleep.

After 55 minutes, some light music will play, indicating that your session is nearing its completion. After 5 more minutes, the tanks' pump system will turn on, indicating that it is time to exit pod. Gently press up on the lid of the pod, and carefully step out into the shower.

Remove your earplugs & place them in the wastebin. Enjoy a hot shower as you scrub the salt from your body, shampoo, & condition your hair. Put on the robe & proceed to the salt room.
Or, get dressed, & exit toward the front desk, leaving your towels & clothes in a small pile in your suite. Stop by the restroom or hair drying station if needed.

    Checkout / Glow

Relax with a book & some hot tea in our lounge, & when you're ready, check out at the front desk. Make sure to stay hydrated, & drive home safely. Over the next few days, enjoy excellent sleep and the post-float 'glow'.
